Norfolk and Norwich University NHS Selects IronKey

Hospital Trust secures active patient records with the world’s most secure USB device

London, February 10, 2011 IronKey, the manufacturer of the world's most secure managed mobile computing solutions, will provide Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust with IronKey Enterprise to secure and protect active patient records. With IronKey Enterprise, consultants, midwives, nurses and information analysts can carry sensitive data without risking violating the UK Data Protection Act or the Department of Health’s Information Governance (IG) Toolkit if a device is lost or stolen.

Ben Everitt, Acting Head of IT at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, commented:"When data losses in other public sector areas hit the news headlines, the Department of Health issued a mandate via the IG toolkit which meant our IT team took the required steps to not only protect all data stored on USB drives, but also to ensure we achieved Level 2 of the toolkit."

The Trust carried out due diligence on a number of vendors. However, a major factor in their decision to deploy IronKey Enterprise was the assurance that even if a device was stolen, they could track and record the IronKey - before remotely destroying all data held on the device and even the IronKey itself. In addition, it also allows the NHS Trust’s IT team to easily manage IronKey Enterprise devices and enforce device-specific policies, including password strength, password retry limits and on-board portable applications.

Everitt added:"During our due diligence process we noticed a number of press reports that highlighted vulnerabilities in some other vendors’ devices - which were also being used by other NHS Trusts – which only served to reinforce our decision to choose IronKey. We felt we had a responsibility to select the most secure device, not necessarily the cheapest."

While the NHS Trust’s IT team are relatively small, they are responsible for over 200 IT systems, the IronKey cloud based-service has meant managing the IronKey devices is easy and cost effective because the team doesn’t have to monitor and service additional hardware.

Colin Woodland, VP EMEA IronKey concluded:"The Information Commissioners Office recent fines of organisations for data loss has simply highlighted the intense scrutiny that IT departments are under to find a way of protecting data. However, it’s refreshing to work with an organisation like the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who’ve rightly placed the security of patient data above everything else."
