What is SuperSpeed USB 3.0?
USB 3.0 is the next major revision to the Universal Serial Bus with the same ease-of-use and plug and play capabilities of previous generation USB technologies, but with a 10X performance increase over previous generation and better power management. This performance increase is achieved through the SuperSpeed technology which allows multiple streams of data transfer and boosts its peak bandwidth to 4.8 Gb/s (~572 MB/s). USB 3.0 devices are compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports and connectors but won’t run at SuperSpeed. To get the SuperSpeed advantage you must use USB 3.0 devices, cables and USB ports with a USB 3.0 host controller.
For users of USB 3.0, the goal of connecting peripherals with PCs or laptops is still the same as the Hi-Speed (USB 2.0) specification. Due to the broad deployment of USB 2.0 devices in the market, SuperSpeed USB devices need to be backward compatible. The higher speed and reduced power consumption for the USB 3.0 specification uses advanced mechanisms and techniques similar to ones that were used for other high bandwidth interfaces, such as the PCI Express (PCIe) specification.
The maximum length of a standard USB cable (for USB 2.0 or earlier) is 5.0 meters (16.4 ft). The USB 3.0 standard does not directly specify a maximum cable length, requiring only that all cables meet an electrical specification. For copper wire cabling, some calculations have suggested a maximum length of perhaps 3m.
Video is one of the big drivers for USB 3.0. HD video uses massive amounts of storage and transferring video through USB 2.0 can be time consuming. External removable storage is also in need of a speed boost. eSATA is fast, however the industry has not seen broad adoption in the market. The first USB 3.0 devices on the market will likely be USB flash drives, external hard drives, external SSDs and digital video cameras.
