ValueRAM shipping new VLP DIMMs

Kingston Technology has begun phasing in Very Low Profile (VLP) DIMMs for unbuffered DDR2 ValueRAM Desktop memory. Some of the best selling modules, such as ValueRAM DDR2 800MHz and DDR2 667MHz, have transitioned to the new VLP standard already.

VLP modules stand 0.72" (18.3mm) high compared to the standard PCB height of 1.18" (30mm). The two designs both comply with JEDEC standards and their functionality and electrical characteristics and interface are exactly the same. Micron buys Qimonda's Inotera stake to consolidate capacity

Micron Technology, the largest U.S. memory-chip maker, has agreed to buy a 35% percent stake in Inotera Memories Inc. from Qimonda AG for $400 million. Helping to consolidate capacity amid recent over-supply in the industry.

Micron and partner Nanya Technology Corp., which owns 35 percent of Taiwan's Inotera, will take over Qimonda's two memory-chip factories.

The deal may help to make Micron more competitive, bringing it closer in size to industry leader Samsung Electronics Co. Micron, the world's fourth-largest memory-chip producer, said losses increased to $1.62 billion in the past fiscal year as memory-chip production out- stripped demand.

The agreement enables Micron to acquire a plant for a fraction of the cost it would take to build it, Chief Operating Officer Mark Durcan said.
