Simms International delivers long-term availability for Mission Management System

A world leader in mission management systems for use in Airborne Law Enforcement, Special Forces, Surveillance and Search & Rescue contacted Simms because they required a PCMCIA-based storage solution which would record information on flight logging and communications links. They also had to be removable to perform post-flight analysis and re-tasking.

The challenge

At the time of adoption PCMCIA cards were still considered to be close to the beginning of their product life-cycle but fast-forward several years with the evolution of NAND and removable memory formats and demand decreased and supply dwindled as PCMCIA card manufacturers switched their attentions to the technologies we are more familiar with today. The challenge that manufacturers of the mission management systems faced was to find a supplier who could still source PCMCIA ATA technology and (more importantly) continue to do so for another 10 years!

The solution

Industrial-grade products are designed for maximum uptime and Simms works only with world-class industrial memory and storage brands. When other manufacturers moved away from PCMCIA technology our vendor, Pretec stayed loyal to their industrial roots, meaning that Simms was able to not only source and secure a reliable current and future supply but also implement industrial control standards such as Last Time Buy (LTB) and Part Change Notifications (PCN) to mitigate obsolescence risks. In addition, Simms also negotiated and implemented a long-term ‘Just in Time’ (JIT) stock facility, thereby ensuring no supply surprises for this legacy technology.

Results & benefits

With Aerospace and Defence projects, the complexities of systems and materials required to deliver a solution are often exhaustive. Some programmes must be supported for a minimum time frame of 10+ years.

Cost and availability benefits dictate that Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products are often integrated. Each component is subject to thorough testing and qualification but the challenge lies in managing COTS technology, due to it’s shorter product life-cycle when compared to the program support duration.

Simms successfully sourced and provided a legacy technology and value-added services to support ongoing commitments for the duration of the project.
