Product Launch: Exascend Unveils Industry-First 30.72TB 7mm U.2 SSD for Edge Storage

Published 15 July 2025
Exascend has introduced its latest innovation in U.2 SSD technology – the 30.72TB PE4. Now available through Simms, this drive offers double the storage density of competing 7mm U.2 solutions, enabling up to 737TB of flash in a single 1U server. By replacing 15mm drives with the slim 7mm PE4, data centre operators can reduce rack space requirements by up to 50%, significantly increasing TB-per-U efficiency.
Despite the high capacity, the PE4 is engineered for power efficiency – drawing just 7 watts under active load and less than 1.5 watts when idle. That’s a 70% power saving compared to typical alternatives, helping to reduce energy costs and ease cooling demands in power-conscious environments.
For deployments at the edge or in infrastructure-constrained environments, the compact and efficient PE4 series provides a practical solution – combining small form factor design with exceptional capacity and low power draw. Ideal for real-time analytics and data-heavy workloads at the edge, it enables users to scale storage without compromising on power or space.
Also joining the range is a new 23.04TB model, offering a mid-point option for customers needing more capacity than 15.36TB without stepping all the way to 30.72TB.
Frank Chen, CEO at Exascend, commented:
“The PE4 30.72TB isn’t just an incremental step – it’s a leap forward in what’s possible for edge and on-premises storage. We’re enabling our customers to increase capacity while maintaining existing server and thermal designs.”
Engineering samples of the PE4 Series U.2 SSD in 23.04TB and 30.72TB models are shipping now to select customers, with volume production scheduled for Q3 2025. The PE4 7mm family are already available in 7.68TB and 15.36TB capacities.
